Obituary, 'The Shirburnian', December 1945: 'Michael Mervyn Lyon Archdale, Lieutenant, Royal Ulster Rifles, was reported missing in Normandy in July 1944, and he is now presumed to have lost his life while out on a patrol. He came to Sherborne from Sandle Manor in September 1934, and left in July 1937. He left school too young ever to reach any position of authority, but he represented the school at Bisley in 1937. His was a shy and retiring nature, but he had a great love for the school, as was shown by the frequency with which he revisited it whenever his military duties permitted.'
