Defenders of Hatra in what is now modern day Iraq saw off an attack by a Roman army in AD 198 by launching clay jars stuffed with Death Stalker scorpions, "the Deathstalker is regarded as the most dangerous species of scorpion" (wikipedia??)

"While a sting from this scorpion is extraordinarily painful, it normally would not kill a healthy adult human"
" A study from Israel shows a high rate of pancreatitis following envenomation."

This would be more desirable than if it killed outright, creates a drain on an army that is already stretched and at the end of a long supply line as well as individuals looking on as their fellow legionaries with whom they would have served for years suffer.
