I've decided to try campaign Monte Cassino to roleplay 2nd Corps (polish) strugle to break GL in area of MC monastery on Elite dificulty.
First mission wasn't so bad I've reached 2 of 3 objectivse on Phantom Ridge but casulties were like 60-70% of my troops. Agreeable, especially during FJ counterattack witch bloodied me the most. It was fun cuz I had to bring my mortar barrage so close to my possitions that it started to hit my own troops, but it was enough to hold german advance.
Second mission. Fighting for so called Cavendish Road. Two times I got uterly destroyed. I know I can continue campaign after defeat but it's kinda unrealistic to start next mission from position I wasn't able to capture. Also I dont want to give up on this mission. So let me explain what I 've tried and maybe You guys have some suggestions.
First time I used a lot of smoke cover and harras artilery bombardment to try reach 1st objective near cavendish road, unlucky wind was so strong that uncover my troops from smoke screen and than sloughter started. Pinned down troops, nowhere to hide. A storm of lead puring down from all around hills. My troops got decimated in like 10 turns, before I managed put smoke screen on my whole troops I suffered so many casulties that I lost any tactical possibility to advance any futher. After cease fire I realised how many troops FJ werent even in fight (hide behind ridges ready to counterattack, propably Axis side have more men that I have to advance).
Second time for a brief moment I was thinking about puting at the begining of battle hell of artilery strikes on possition where FJ kept their reinforcments but It's kind of cheating my way trough... So once again I moved forward with brave Poles. This time i tried to put direct MG and mortar fire on any spoted enemy possision. I also put more smoke screen and tried to move it in front of my advancing troops, calculating this time wind direction. It worked well a bit better up to point when my troops started assaulting enemy possitions... Lack of faster rate of fire weapons (1 thomson and Bren per squad is defenietly not enough for close fights). Cracked FJ troops armed with MG 42, schmeisser's and FG42 again were superior over my regular troops equiped mostly with bolt action rifles. Germans had propably TRP on those objectives beacause in min or two I recived so accurate mortar fire that each round was killing 3-4 of my men. I pulled back from mortar barriage whats left from my assaulting teams. Tried to counter fire with my own fire support and of course I forgot about keeping smoke screen up. More and more fire pour on my troops especially from right flank where my mortars and MG's have no line of sight to utilate cover fire. Again casulties, low morale and pindown situation made almost impossible to prepare another attack.
In few days I will make another try, this time propably I will delay advance till tank support arrives and than move again, clearing mines etc.
If You guys have any suggestions, hints or tactics please feel free to share with me and maybe some others players who wants to crack that egg )
