Advanced Tactics Gold - 3 NATIONS WAR - multiplayer campaign

Hi -- anyone besides @Nathangun and myself still playing this?

It's great fun hex-based game with a really well-oiled game engine ... a bit of a break from the 3D CM crack cocaine. :D

We recently started a PBEM battle ... (a bit of an AAR here: http://www.thefewgoodmen.com/thefgm...-tactics-rico-vs-nathangun.23392/#post-204256 ) ... and thought it might be fun to set up a multi-player campaign played via PBEM ... random map and random assigned regimes, starting pretty much all research and resources from scratch... with a decent turn rate as we pass on the files from player to player. Some AAR-ing could be fun too.

The game's been upgraded recently... with ability to create divisional/brigade OOB's that the HQ's then automatically try and maintain at strength -- taking quite a bit of the admin out of it.

Maybe 3 human players + a few AI nations ... or 4 human players probably ideal.

We could kick this off during first or second week of Feb when I get back from my trip.

I love strategy games like this. I'd be willing to grab a copy and play

I played it a lot when it first came out. Very addictive. However, it wasn't long until we discovered that the side that expanded the quickest pretty much always won. When the newness wore of it went on the shelf. Maybe it's changed by now.

It's possible if not likely. Patches usually address balancing issues like that, but don't take my word for it.

Well, that is the way wars go - if one side manages to garner more resources and is given the time and space to build a stronger force,, they will win usually.
It's getting to that point where the balance tips irrevocably that's interesting

The problem was that the time that it became evident one side had won the resource expansion game was relatively short, thus killing off the competitive interest rather quickly. As mentioned, perhaps the upgrades since then have affected the situation positively.

Any tips for a complete newbie? I wouldn't mind reading through a basic tutorial or something

There's a few playthroughs on YouTube - don't have any links handy on my phone.

Make sure you update it to the latest version - can answer any specific questions here if I see them.

We can get a 3 player game going with you and Nathangun when I get back from my trip on Feb 1.

I agree, it can turn into that - but with the random maps and start from scratch research you can face fascinating strategic conundrums to solve and see how well you can do in the circumstances even if you might have no chance of winning.
I actually agree with mTk's reading of the game... I found it to be a resource/expansion rush then a slog churning out more units than your opponent and wearing them down.

I'm watching a youtube let's play of ATG... I don't know how to use staff or set up a hierarchy of HQs, so I think I might glean some useful info from the videos

On starting a game, if you are starting off with one city, the first few turns you want to build up staff, trains and trucks then engineers.

To create a HQ, click on the 'new formation' tab in the center of the buttons at the bottom of the screen. Once created, you will have to select who will be it's HQ, which is usually your starting HQ.

The same applies when you create a new formation, once created you will have to assign it to a HQ.

You can off course change a units' HQ by selecting the formation and then clicking on the white and red checkered flag, useful if the formation is cut off from it's original HQ.

If you have any more questions please ask. ;)

That's exactly what I needed to know @Nathangun :) thanks. I didn't realize you could reassign HQs like that. What specifically do staff do? I think I understand trains, trucks and engineers.

My understanding of the propose of the staff is in game is when you send reinforcements from High Command to one of the HQ's, is they redistribute the reinforcements at a lower fuel cost.
I could be wrong, might be a good idea to check the manual.

Also, when you click on a HQ check the staff %, the higher the % the more efficient it is.
