Noor Inayat Khan, a descendant of the legendary Tipu Sultan, was a secret agent in the WW2.- She was infiltrated into France by the Special Operations Executive (SOE), Churchill’s secret organisation that sought to “set Europe ablazeâ€.
Armed with only a false passport and a pistol, Noor became the first woman radio operator to be sent to occupied Paris.
However, she was betrayed and captured by the Germans. During her month-long interrogation, she gave nothing away. As a result of her violent attempts to resist arrest, she was transferred to Dachau.
On the morning of 11 September 1944, 30-year-old Khan was executed by a shot to the back of the head.-
Britain posthumously awarded her the George Cross for her extraordinary bravery, and France honoured her with the Croix de Guerre.-
