Having now had Combat Mission Red Thunder for a little while now, and having experienced a few scenarios with air units (I was going to say air support but thought that over sold it) I would like to congratulate the Soviet Airforce on their even handed treatment of both the Red Army and the Wehrmacht.

In every scenario I have played so far they have never shirked from attacking both the ground based protagonists in an even handed fashion, how the tank commanders have come to love them as they desperately try to make to the safety of their tank as an IL2 comes strafing in.

In my first game I had actually come to assume that we both had air support (dear me I can be so naive). And thats the other thing to be fair to them - they don't actually seem to do much damage - although I was the proud possessor of a Quad 20mm in one game (almost to the end of the game) before the IL2 decided to shred vehicle and crew. This was another fine moment actually, as the 20mm had been engaging the IL2 as it strafed some of its own T34s talk about even handed.

Imagine my glee when I heard @PhilM recount their valiant destruction of a German Big Cat in one of his games, oh the pangs of jealousy - but yes you guessed it - that explosion had nothing to do with the Red AirForce.

So that brings me to the reason for the post, is this common or not - what are your experiences of air units?
Do tell...

I haven't played RT enough yet to have a lot of air support but I loved your post. It made me laugh out loud.

Did you eventually buy "recruit" planes?

In a match sometime ago with me as the Russian player I bought 4 recruit fighter planes for ground attacks (very cheap),
one of them also attacked my own men and trucks allthough they were mortars which were standing in the rear, very close to
their original setup zone (not the area for a ground attack, of course).

But I wasn't so very astonished about it as this also happend before in CMx1 sometimes. Just thought that this was the price
I had to pay for buying "recruits". ;)

@nathangun Thank you - even the comment that you haven't seen it is encouragement from me - since I have seen it every time (hence the post).

Perhaps it is the experience level. I must confess its the buying your points thing in ME's perhaps I didn't get competent pilots...

I havent played around with air units in RT enough yet to get a feel for if they FF to often. Experience playes a part Im sure.

Experience level of airplaines in CMRT has definitely nothing to do with the random outcome.
Same counts for FLAKs fireing at airplanes.
Planes in CMRT are bad coded and worthless.
