Artillery purchases in Quick Battles

As a rule of thumb, proportionally how much artillery do you usually take in a Quick Battle? What types of artillery do you take, and what considerations do you have in their use?

Getting a better understanding of the use of off-board assets is something I'm currently working on, so I was wondering what people usually ended up doing.

As a reference point, this is one of the more useful sources I've found for real life (US) applications:
http:// http://www.poeland.com/tanks/artillery/sheafs.html
http://www.poeland.com/tanks/artillery/sheafs.html

Converged sheafs are point targets in CM terms, Parallel sheafs would be area fire, and Regular and Open sheafs would be linear missions, perpendicular to the line of fire. I need to do some testing into how these tables look in-game, but at first glance they look pretty sensible, with the definitions:

Quick - 2-4 rounds
Short - 6-12 rounds
Medium - 12-18 rounds
Long - 20-28 rounds
Maximum - exhausts ammo supply

I think what surprised me with the above is how short some of the mission widths are ("frontages"?), but the actual number of rounds seems fairly plausible.

Great material from both links... thanks guys

Myself for QB Selection when I am on Defense I will pull assets that I deem appropriate for the size of my defending units example:

Company Size Rifle Defensive force... I will pull 1 (4) or 2 (2) battery 81mm off map and grab an FO and a couple TRPs... and probably remove the on map (if in OOB) mortars that would come with the company...

On Offensive it is a different story, but I really never go beyond what the units sizes could draw upon in real life (or based upon the OOB)...

I always find it a good idea to discuss Arty and Big Cats with your opponent before hand so as to avoid a surprise 'gamey' solution to either... one needs to do this if rarity is open (I always like the ability to get something 'special' Wirbelwind or rare AC or something) and you can only do that with open rarity...

And great links guys...

Cheers

I have to agree with what TeddyR has mentioned above. When I am playing a match vs my opponent I like to make sure we are both in agreement as to what the actual units we have would actually use ( Arty of all types ) in that Scenario.

Usually I always have either way for offence or defense 81 to 120mm mortars, just to help my troops out. But I like to play with actual spotters and have my units in line of site of an objective before unleashing a firestorm of Arty.

There is nothing worse then moving 2 turns and having a massive barrage of Arty hit you when you know that the enemy would have never know you where there.

Hey, simulationist gaming is kinda my thing... Combat Mission, KSP, Combat Commander, High Frontier... it's all good.

That's part of point of the above really - which actually gives me another question. As a concrete example, how many 25pdr guns would "usually" be assigned to a British Infantry Battalion? Clearly the lead company (or wherever was the most important) would presumably get the most benefit from them.

Offboard arty?

Tiny or Small QBs: generally none (perhaps a single small/medium mortar battery if I'm the attacker)
Medium QBs: a battery or two
Large/Huge QBs: More

Keep in mind that almost everyone agrees that dropping pre-planned arty in your opponent's setup zone is very poor sportsmanship in Meeting Engagements and for the Defender in Probe/Attack/Assault QBs. It is, however, perfectly acceptable for the Attacker, IMO. I am also of the opinion that *any* pre-planned arty goes against the spirit of Meeting Engagements, therefore I will seldom buy offboard arty in Meets, since I find it to be mostly useless in Meets if both sides agree not to use it Pre-Planned (as is proper).

I would have to agree with Meat Grinder and what he mentioned above, some very good points to play by.
