GDANSK - A frightened, shivering dog was rescued after floating 75 miles on an ice floe down Poland’s Vistula River and into the Baltic Sea.
A dog lies exausted after being rescued from an ice floe in the Baltic Sea. The thick-furred pet was found by the Baltica, a Polish ship of ocean scientists. He was spotted last Saturday floating on ice on the Vistula river in Grudziadz but firefighters could not reach him because of the shifting sheets. In minus 20C (-4F) temperatures, the animal drifted out into the Baltic. Natalia Drgas, a researcher on the Baltica, said yesterday that the dog was located on Monday and rescued after a pontoon was lowered and a crew member pulled him to safety. Massaged, fed and warmed up, the pet, nicknamed Baltic, was back on his feet. The researchers plan to keep him if his owners are not found.
