Last weekend (Pentecost weekend) the family and I were in Brussels staying at friends. Apart from seeing "manneken pis" (I think you know what the name means)
we went to the location where the Battle of Waterloo was fought.
First of all we went to the "Butte de Lion" (Lion's mound).
For those who can't read Dutch or French here it is in German. And English.
The mound is a little over 40 meters high,
and although that doesn't sound high, I can tell you climbing it took some time recovering! BTW the lovely lady in the black coat is my wife.
From the mound you get a view of the battlefield. Of course nothing left of any signs there was a battle some 200 years ago. In the woods on the right was the Houguemont farm.
And on the mound, overlooking the battlefield, a plaque is placed with the position of the forces during the battle.
In a building at the site a 360 degrees panaroma painting of the battle is housed. A few shots.
(Seems the Dutch/Belgians weren't as cowardly as some British account would suggest.)
There is also a small wax museum and other goodies to be seen.
We also watched a movie about the battle and there is a large shop with lots of rubbish and interesting stuff for sale and three rstaurants/cafe's where you can drink a Belgian beer. It is the country (despite its small size) with the highest number of beers (kinds) in the world.
Very nice trip!
