Just finished this very chilling non-fiction look at what may befall us as we continue to pursue the quest for AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), i.e. artificial intelligence that is at least the equal of our human brains. Narrow AI (what we have now) is already superior to our human intelligence in very specific tasks (Chess, for a well known example). What will happen to us, as a species, when we finally manage to invent AGI?

This may actually be a possible explanation for the Fermi Paradox, i.e. the invention of AGI may be The Great Filter.

Well worth reading, IMO.

Maybe the world will be better then? Or it goes totally to the loo. In every case we will not experience that for long.

Greetings

I´ll just hope they´ll insall a new engine. My knees are a bit jiverish.

According to the author, the time frame between Artificial General Intelligence (artificial intelligence generally equivalent to human intelligence) and Artificial Super Intelligence (artificial intelligence far superior to human intelligence) may be very, very short. And what will this artificial intelligence think about humans? It might give us no more thought than we do when we step on an ant hill. Sobering stuff, when you consider it.

Does it matter?
Cause as things stand now. We as a species will die on this rock called Earth, one way or the other.
Guess I´m a bit of a cynic here, but fact is that we have used up way to many resources to be able to continue much longer.
It´s over!
I´ll give it 200 years tops. After that no AI, no matter how smart, will be able to turn things in any favour but oblivion.
HA! I knew I had poetry in me!

Damn. I think I just found someone even more bleak than myself. ;-)

Nah, don't worry buddy. More likely some plague or supervirus will wipe us out before we use up all the resources. That, or a big asteroid, or a gamma ray burst, or a rogue planet, etc. And then, a new species will arise and become the superpredators of planet earth! I, for one, welcome our new saurian overlords. Perhaps they will keep us as pets. :)

There will be no new species.
Chances might be that were it. Don´t give me that Darwin stuff that after were gone, some worm is gona develop legs and brains and start inventing stuff.
bah. Were it!
200 years. I´ll give it 200 tops. You might be right about those cause of events you mention.
Me personally. I´m betting on Yellowstone. We already have Fukoshima. Check out all those fish boiling and dying in that river just 180 km from the reactor site. Rescent video.
We actually ARE going out with a whimper. The whole frog being boiled scenario.

Almost looks like theyre being scolded and are trying to get out no?

Currently reading Nomad, a "thriller" about some super massive deep space object (I'm guessing a neutron star, though I'm only about 1/4 of the way through the book) passing through our solar system at 8000 kilometers per second. I got sucked into it (lol) on that premise, but it seems to be about half romance novel so far.

Dude, how complex does the AI have to be in this country to be "a threat". My guess is that 75% of the US population has an IQ of about 75. Oh wait, yeah, we're really screwed, I think my refrigerator with the computer is locking me out and locked the doors.

Thanks, Ted, but oh, I am. And it's Bristol Race Weekend! There is nothing quite like the mixture of traffic, alcohol induced poor judgement, and gasoline (petrol, for you Brits) to make my weekend working in Bristol's medical center............interesting. :)

Just think, when they perfect driverless cars there will be no wrecks and no driver fatalities. Bet the ratings drop then by God.

Lol, I know you are joking, but yea, I do think the average IQ of the general population has probably dropped some in the last, oh, 50 years. Could it be because of all the electronic devices we constantly use? Hard to say. If you get a chance, watch the movie Idiocracy. It's a story about a guy who takes part in a secret military hibernation experiment, and wakes up 500 years later in a dystopian society full of, well, idiots. The guy was just average intelligence when he went into hibernation, but is the smartest person in the world when he wakes up. Pretty interesting, and sad.

I listen to a lot of Jordan Peterson. Here is part of one of his lectures on IQ:
