Could you get the download file to open? (I presume so from your post!)

The Mac version of the download file has, by default, no filename / filetype extension ... adding ".zip" (which I presume it is??) to the name doesn't work for me, as it simply opens more and more zip files each time I try and open one ...

I'm on Windows, but when I went to download it, I could choose between a Windows.zip and a Mac.pkg.
The Windows file i downloaded also had no extension, but when I added the ".zip", I was able to open it just fine.
Maybe if you add ".pkg" for Mac? That could be the correct extension.

Thanks for the advice guys ....

I did have the correct Mac file; but as Mad Mike says, it needs a .pkg extension (not .zip) adding for a Mac.

Now I look again at the BF download screen (!), the filename on screen does show the .pkg extension, but the actual download doesn't have it ...

I would have expected either a .zip file (work fine for Macs just like PCs) or a Mac .dmg (disk image) file, which is how downloads usually are sent. I hadn't thought to try the "raw" .pkg file extension.

Thanks again for the help.

Does any one know if it's going to screw up existing PBEM battles?

Both players have to upgrade at the same point for games in 3.11 to continue in 3.12:

Here is a quote from IanL's response to this point on the BF forum ...

You cab upgrade your PBEM games. Just make sure you coordinate that with your opponent. Once you upgrade your opponent will not be able to read the turn file until they upgrade as well.

The procedure is to review the latest turn in the old version, move to the command phase and save the game. Then open the saved game in the newer version and generate the new email file.

My usual recommendation is to make a copy of your game install first. Rename the new copied dir something that makes sense and then install the patch on top of the copy. That way you can keep playing your PBEM games while you coordinate with your opponents and you can play with the new content.

Apparently the dl files are fixed on their server so subsequent down-loaders will not have this problem. For those of us that downloaded it without the file extension the correct extensions to add are as @Mad Mike suggests above.

Be advised, there is no option to choose where it installs to. So if your like me and have multiple installs, it will install to whatever you installed most recently. At least this is what it did to me.

Yeah, same here. Guess I should have tested it then eh? In fact mine installed to a place where I no longer have a game installed but that actually worked just fine because I was able to copy the files over the place I did want it installed and it worked fine. So it worked out but not exactly easy for a non techie.

Yeah all thats really needed to go back to 3.11 if needed is to replace the new 3.12 cmbn.exe with your old 3.11 cmbn.exe. I also deleted out of the data folder the 312 brz and just like that Im back to 3.11 with no problems.
