In a vein attempt to get as far away from numbers and spreadsheets as I can I decided to test my newb skills at layering and effects. I'm a huge fan of what Umlaut did to the snow uniforms for Gustav Line with the dusting of snow over the infantry so it doesn't look like they are racing out fighting in pristine new coats straight out of the sweat shop.

Yeah I'm no artist, and living in a climate that see's snow around once a decade... Help. :)

For me work with uniforms is the more difficult, the clothes are deformed when they adapt to the bodies (skeletons).

Went back to it. Take 2. Sort of 'stolen' some snow textures so probably can't release it but I'm never happy with my own work. More learning the ins and outs of photoshop more than anything else.

M41's. Much lighter on since they won't be used much and if so probably just a light snow.

Nice work. Please continue. If it helps, think in terms of where snow might stick more to a person's clothing. Usually as smudges / streaks / dustings at points of contact; boot soles, knees, and elbows. More of what you've done to toes of bazooka man in greatcoat and what you started with M41. Nicely powdered effect on helmet. Gloves and scarf (if possible to map such texture) would enhance effect as well.

Cheers for the encouragement. FYI I live in one of the hottest parts of the world and in my 32 years of existence experienced snow first hand for 6 days. ;)

Any help from you guys about how snow reacts would help. :)

Once snow has settled on your clothes, it just melts and you get wet, perhaps a few mud splats on the trench coats.

I respectfully beg to differ. What you describe happens when the ambient temperature of your clothing warms up enough to melt such snow. Either the outdoor temperatures rise somewhat, you go inside, or you stand besides a fire / other heat source.
East front sub-zero temperatures and the weather for Bastogne were bone-chilling cold. Snow cover on clothing there did not melt outdoors; solders might brush it off instead. Italian winters were damper and there are circumstances in those campaigns more in line with what you describe. A damp cold will cause damp snow to melt on its own.
Layered clothing works to prevent snow melting on outerwear. The inner layers (like long underwear) are intended to trap and retain your body heat so you stay warm. The outer layers ward off exterior cold and wind chill. When sweating chills you from the inside it doesn't normally affect your outer clothing.

I've only experienced Irish snow mostly, which is mostly sleet, other than that there's a few visits to Sweden.

So... Snow Grogs exist. ;)

We do indeed! I know it's bitterly cold outside when the snow is so frozen that your footsteps crunch like walking on Styrofoam and the wind swirl hits your face like stinging wasps.

To Nathangun's point, I'll bet the snowfall in Ireland is very different from that of Scandinavia! :kilroy:
The Central Siberian Yupik language has 40 different words for distinct kinds of snow. The Inuit dialect spoken in Canada’s Nunavik region has at least 53. The Sami people of northernmost Scandinavia and Russia use at least 180 words related to snow and ice. Who knew modding for winter would be this complicated? I'll settle in gratitude for whatever efforts the modders chose to do. Thank you for yours. They look very good. I especially like the wrapped scarf's on some of your tank riders. Thank you for your efforts.

Sort of inspired by Umlauts work for CMFI and I'm too impatient for him to do it. :p As I said before this is more about me trying to learn Photoshop like tools for the first time. Snow is applied in a mixed/randomised fashion to all uniforms and gear for both the US and German forces to try and avoid uniformity as much as possible. Some pixeltruppen have been lightly dusted while others have been made to look like they've been rolling in it.

I've never liked the clean uniforms in snowy and muddy conditions. Snow you can play around with due to the built in mod tags hard coded to CMFB and CMFI. However the same doesn't apply to Muddy... which is a shame and hope they tweak in the future.

Thoughts? I don't know if I can upload to CMMODS. I've been using CMFB base textures and a couple of Umlauts textures as reference. Maybe uploading the .psd templates for others to mess around with for their chosen uniforms? @Bootie

Excellent, and thank you, Ith! Btw, I'd like to fool around with the psd files if you don't mind. I'm always effing around with uni mods...just never complete them anymore, lol. But since you've done the grunt work....
