CMRT tips and experiences

Now that we've had a couple of months to get to grips with Red Thunder I thought I'd put a post out asking for peoples' tips and experiences playing RT? In particular how you FGMers have found playing with the Soviets and how to combat their advantages and disadvantages when playing as the Germans. I feel the Soviets add something completely diifferent to game, having a very different feel to playing with the Germans, Italians, British or Americans.

To get the ball rolling, personally I've found German infantry kicks the Soviets' arses when combating them at range, with the Reds having nothing in there arsenal (mortars aside) which matches up to the German MG42 which can be deadly when used on the steppe. However, at short ranges the Soviet SMG teams have a definite advantage (many a good German infantryman has been lost in the woods to a PPSh-41).

I don't know if it's just me but I've also found Soviet armour to be pretty inaccurate firing at ranges of 700-800m+, and on a number of instances a single German tank has been able to take out several T-34s before any of the Soviet tanks get close to striking the German one. Has this just been poor/good luck on my part, or are Soviet AT guns more inaccurate than their German counterparts in RT? From my understanding of the situation back in WWII, this reflects the reality of the situation with Soviet optics and rifling being relatively poor when compared to their German counterparts.

Anyways it'd be good to hear some of your views!

Well Odin, it looks like you are talking about our experience in the game we are playing. :) Your Stug taking out those T-34s of mine really frustrated the hell out of me. :) I agree with your assessments, my T-34s saw your Stug and then couldn't hit it with several shots taken. I was ready to pull out my commanders pistol and execute those TC\gunners of those tanks. Poor Russian optics seem to be modeled or at least are part of the calculations IMHO. Might be skill level in there as well in terms of those T-34s of mine because I did carefully place them in hull downs etc., but to no avail. Interesting experience to say the least and I've got to say it seems pretty close to what I've read in the history books in terms of Russian gunnery.

Can't really comment on the infantry aspect of it yet since we have not done the dance yet in our PBEM.

@enigma haha yes I thought you were definitely on the receiving end of poor Russian optics during that exchange. If it gives you any comfort, I've taken a few hits from German tanks when the roles have been reversed ;)

Hi Odin,
ill share my experience so far:
Russian infantry is very poor at fighting german tanks at close range (no molotovs), area fire helps!
Some russian units fire HE shells instead of AP. IE ISU 152 at Tiger II or medium flaks at armored vehicles.
Panzerschreck teams dont share ammo.
Airplanes are totally useless, IL2 attacks at random and couldnt kill my truck.

I was wondering how the changes to calling in air strikes would affect their effectiveness. Not much use then?

On a separate subject I noticed a panzershreck team, being used by @Shorker , fire from inside a house. Did I imagine that, or have things changed and shrecks can now fire from inside buildings?

If my memory serves me correctly (which isn't always so ... :) ), that was introduced in v2.12 of CMBN / MG, just before RT came out - so I guess it's in RT as well ...

Odin, PhilM is correct. Schrecks, fausts, bazookas can now fire from buildings. Sometimes your men will be suppressed, sometimes injured, but it's a great improvement.

@Odin

Yes, they can shoot out of houses but in this case there was also a big hole in the wall too, I think. ;)

Don't you always click on "view map" after the battle is over for to watch the battlefield and units afterwards?
I highly recommend to do so. ;)

@Shorker yes I do view the map afterwards. I just hadn't heard about panzershrecks being able to fire from buildings, so I wasn't sure if you were firing outdoors and then moving the teams inside afterwards.

Roger that! :) I was firing from inside the building.

I almost feel bad adding to the various comments as I have made my comments on the linking of optics to line of sight pretty clear- but because the soviet optics are poor, then trying to see or shoot is always going to be harder. I must acknowledge tho that I have seen Panther crews killed by T34 85s in one shot. And equally I have played a 6 tank battle where the soviet tanks never saw the German tanks that killed them despite looking at them.
I agree the games play very differently, soviet smgs are unrivalled in woods, but as Odin says they struggle against range, and the lack of a bazooka is a cruel weakness.

Having said all this, I enjoy playing the soviets, we all know German equipment and tactical ability made them the best man for man soldiers in ww2. So it's even sweeter to win with them- and on a good day the equipment will function fine- one thing I guess to remember, this is the soviets at their best- look toward to games with just infantry against tanks - or backed by T26s or bt5s let the Russians enjoy any success they can...

I have just begun to play PBEM and am still adjusting to the Soviets.
  • I don't like the lack of smoke for infantry units
  • Still getting used to the short range of the SMG's and being able to advance without suppressing fire from distances over 300mm
  • Soviet units seem to break easily
  • Could be a one off situation, but in one game I called for off map mortars, it has taken about 12 minutes rather than the 8 minutes claimed for the barrage to arrive.
  • As the Germans, the sound of 122mm or 152mm rounds being fired and echoing across the map is disheartening.
Remember in SL Soviet units could go beserk? That's what I want to see...

Full marks for trying. Someone buy that man a drink.

Whats SL Soviet ?

I remember the 'Human wave' in CMBB. All the troops shouting 'Huzzar !' . Class.

No thanks. Too many people did that. Problems ensued. Much better now.

Whats SL Soviet ?

Squad Leader. Ancient board game. When soviet squads had to pass a morale check, if you rolled a 12, you swapped the regualar counter for a red counter and they had to rush at the nearest enemy unit...IIRC. They were bezerkers!

OK then. Someone get that man a refreshing drink ;)

Sniff, I have faint memories of the musky smell of the ASL rulebook. Sigh.... :(

Loved that in SL. I still think about that...and Fanatical units when I play CM (that means "Combat Mission"...LOL).
