The only news is that CMx3 will be both modern and WW2, and that both will come out approximately at the same time.

And this bit:

"2. Upgrade 5 for CM2 is now a "wait and see" situation. My feeling is we'd be better off spending our time on CM3 than making CM2 work faster/smoother than it does right now. However, if CM2 were to stop working due to an OS or hardware change I can assure you that fixing it would be looked at very seriously. The upshot is Upgrade 5 is very much on our minds still, but it is not on the development calendar."

Woah. Some of the people on the official forum are really dense..

Steve said his prototype is running on a Mac for now and that they will try to keep it portable.

I am both excited and saddened... Excited that a new, desperately-needed engine is coming. A little saddened when I think about all the CM2 content that I own but will never get to play once CM3 comes out. :)

This might even make me get back to the game. But as with all the previous new years updates, I'll believe it when I see it.

Interesting how he says they have been working on CM3 for several years now, but at the same time, he has been telling people they were planning to do an engine 5 upgrade for the current game.

Now, that upgrade has been cancelled. At least that's my interpretation of "Upgrade 5 is very much on our minds still, but it is not on the development calendar".

Personally, I'm fine with them doing a proper CM3 instead of trying to work on making the old decrepit one go a little bit farther. It's so long overdue.

It just smacks a bit of trying to squeeze more sales out of the existing game by stringing people along with hints that the engine will get an upgrade (so please stop complaining and keep buying new content), while knowing full well that they are actually focusing on a whole new game behind the scenes.

Happy that he finally sold the business. Hopefully Slitherine can make things move forward again.

You have a point there, although I rate it as unlikely that it was deliberate.

Also “working on CM3” doesn’t start with coding. It would start with research and design, which could happen while not impacting dev of an engine 5 upgrade.

Yes, very true, but according to Steve on the official forum:

For many years now Battlefront has been hard at work on CM3, a completely ground up game engine based on the concepts of CM1 and CM2 combined with the powerful features Unity has to offer. By late 2023 we had a pretty sweet looking late Alpha (or early Beta, depending on how you define it) that had all kinds of awesome features we've long wanted to bring to Combat Mission.

So even more than a year ago, CM3 was already about to enter beta, which means it was a rough but playable game, not in an early research or planning stage.
