CW Cup 2022 - Round 2 / Battle 3

So you could give me even more of a headache ?:D

But I must say I was surprised that your entire infantry came in on foot. I intended to give your (supposed) mechanized troops a bit of a scare with my pre mortar fire but it was for nothing except for a bit of fireworks. Regardless of that your troops seem to be at least as fast as they would with their APCs. As soon as your arty stopped their fire, your GIs stood at my doorstep...spooky.
Yeah but they’re all exhausted now with only 12 mins left. The Minor Obj should be taken and at best I might be able to contest one of the Major Obj. None the less this will be a US loss. Your never ending supply of arty has done the devils work in this one. Coupled with what I figure to be loads of TRPs.

I am seeing a LOT of different strategies and force selections from both sides, which is really cool.
If you know what both players' setup zones look like there is one optimal strategy that should be apparent. It's the one my opponent is using (and from the sounds of it @Brille also). It's also the one I tried to use but I unfortunately chose poor tools for the job.

I've mapped out this side of the battlefield pretty good, yes.

If not for the trp the battle would have shaped pretty differently I suppose.
Call in times are just 2 minutes, 1 minute if I adjust the fire mission (Crack observers, veteran mortar crew) . That is insane for Soviet style arty.

They may be poor tools, but you have a lot of them :D

That was certanly a tough one, after the 5 minute mark it beacame less of a battle and more of an all-out brawl.

What saved me this time was a slow-maximum 155 barrage that begun at the start of the battle, ended at the 29 minute mark and was able to ping around between TRP's to smash Russian positions or deter enemy advances

This battle also proved to me that I tend to fudge my force selection by starting the planning process with the wrong foot (the first units I selected were air force instead of infantry) and min-maxing too much; The 4 gun cobras I brought to the battle proved to be next to useless, while 1-2 more platoons of infantry would have been a godsend in the last 10 minutes of the battle.

It looks like our battle is going into overtime. Is that kosher?

No it isn't. I had this problem in 2 tournament battles now, so I communicated with my following opponents to hit cease fire in the planning phase of the last turn. This way it will finish exactly on zero.

Brille is correct - stop the game ASAP, as generally more time favors the Attacker.
I just double-checked, and the Overtime flag for the map is set to "None." Sometimes the game just randomly seems to assign overtime regardless. Frustrating. It seems to happen a few times every round.

I think maybe it's because if that setting is ever turned on in the original scenario creation, it cant be undone. Even if the scenario is edited to "None". It's like the setting becomes baked into the scenario file forever. I could be wrong though as Im not a sceanrio designer. Think I saw somebody confirm this years ago.

That is possible but that would be a bug. I have seen it happen automatically because an occupy objective changed status near the end of the game. At least that was what I thought caused that at the time. Any chance @Brille that is has happened in your match?

In our battle, @Nathangun and I had similar amounts of infantry in the middle major objective along with a BMP (him) and an M113 (me) but right at the last minute it appeared to me that Nathan brought in one of his T-64s and in the overtime two minutes shot up all but one of my infantry units. So, from what I could tell, there was a significant force change in that middle objective just as time was about to run out.

In spite of this, I think I enjoyed this battle more than any of the others in the tournament.

Spoogles and I have concluded our battle with a minor victory for the US Army.

Unlike the non-violent chess match I had recently fought against The Stache, this game was a crazy violent sh*t-show with 350 casualties and a few hundred corpses on the battlefield. Someone should get tagged with a cool nickname like "The Butcher of Dorfborn" lol.

I will surely be courts martialed or possibly fragged by my own troops for the ghastly way I pushed young American soldiers repeatedly into enemy kill zones in vain attempts put boots on objective dolphin, despite the strategic failure of my assault plan. Regarding that... I experimented with siege howitzers and ended up paying the stupid tax here. I had planned a shock and awe type artillery finale to prep the ground for invasion. I had 2 platoons of 155 and two of 120, both organic to my formation, I brought two extra 204 platoons, you know, the maximum allowed by law. Commander ALBY did not do his homework and to my great suprise, the call times for these guns is crazy SLOW and the rate of fire is also SLOW. In a quandry, I attempted to adjust the mission, and my spotter was turned to red paste during the spotting process by a mortar burst and the guns went into limbo. So yes, the timing was such that I ran my troops onto objective EAGLE and DOLPHIN not really knowing if those siege guns would begin firing at just about the same time. self pwn3d. The big guns might have fired 4 rounds total.

I also had trouble getting a spot deep into DOLPHIN and found myself holding extra 155 at the bitter end. It was ammo that really needed to be dropped on the infantry hiding in buildings. So, you know, f@ck this tank instead...

Screenshot (24).png

So, to make a long story short, when my infantry showed up at the major objectives, Spoogles troops were not pinned and panicking in collapsed buildings. They were still pretty frosty and the assault looked like a trench storming scene from Gallipoli. It was not a proud day for American Infantry.

On the plus side, we took minor objective COWBOY and that fire plan and attack went well. American troops are very effective jungle fighters.

We also shot down some choppers, but only after they attacked and broke my formations that were in the open, trying to get close to DOLPHIN. It was a very effective use of inexpensive airpower. Spoogles ran a clinic on 'bang for your buck' airpower here.

I brought most of a dismounted infantry battalion and 3 TTS tanks, 2 vulcans and one m113 for use as a command vehicles.

Of course, this M113 along with battalion command and a bunch of HQ units was hit directly with a 120MM mortar about mid game, killing them all.

The TTS tanks could spot and hit, but not kill enemy tanks. This tank took 4 105 hits and a TOW.
Screenshot (22).png

If I had brought 155 instead of 204, then I do believe I would have turned the major objectives into a lunar landscape and my plan could have succeeded. But, as this battle sits, I gamed it and ran onto the objectives to contest them. If Spoogles pushed back, my troops would surely fold like grandma on laundry day.

This battle was great fun and I would like to commend my opponent for being an excellent opponent in every way. Thank you to OPO for his efforts here.
