A game very similar to golf was played in ancient China more than five hundred years before its first known mention in Scotland.

A game similar to golf was played in the Low Countries (and probaly France too) in the 1200's. Perhaps before too, but there is no written mention of that. It was called "colf".
At the end of the 17th century people stopped playing the outdoors variant (which almost certainly evolved to present day golf), and began playing a indoors variant with changed rules. At present it is a veru small sport in the Netherlands. The name has changed to "kolf".

SStill a lot of expressions and sayings are used in Dutch which were derived from this game.
