Nobody knows where the word "golf" comes from.



Although golf was originally restricted to wealthy, overweight Protestants, today it's open to anybody who owns hideous clothing. DAVE BARRY

I have also been told, in jest, that it stems from "Gentlemen Only. Ladies Forbidden."

Some of the best golfers I know are women.

The medieval Dutch word "kolf" or "kolve" meant "club." It is believed that word passed to the Scots, whose old Scots dialect transformed the word into "golve," "gowl" or "gouf."
