Gerald R Ford (1913-2006), 38th President of the USA, is the only US President who was never elected as either President or Vice President.

Ford was basically a lame duck when he was appointed to the Vice Presidency. His predecessor, Spiro Agnew, resigned under a cloud of suspicion and the dark clouds of Watergate were beginning to swirl around the Nixon White House. Ford got the VP job primarily because he was considered the pick least likely to draw any more unwanted attention to the administration. Basically, he was the most boring pick. By the time he assumed the Presidency, Watergate had nearly torn the nation apart. The Democrats could have run Mickey Mouse against him in 76 (and they basically did!) and he would have been defeated.
