Interesting how form follows function. The slouched hats and bandoliers pictured are quite similar to those of US troops in the concurrent Spanish American War. So, what heroic act did John Bates perform as Lord Grantham's batman in the Boer War to earn such resolute loyalty from his lordship at Downton Abbey?

An acceptable compromise when you have to watch something the wife, girlfriend, and mistress (or all three together) likes for a change.
Probably why I'm not married, girlfriend's always watched me play combat mission.
