The rocket war is held during the Easter period,from Big Saturday till Easter Sunday,in Vrontados Village Chios Island.
The custom goes back to 19th century when Chios was occupied by the Turks.
In that village there are two churches Saint Markos and Virgin Mary.
The objective of the two <<teams>> its to hit as many times as possible the other teams church.
Its well known in Greece and each year thousants of spectators are watching or even some times taking part,firing some of the rockets.
Last year the authorities tried to stop the custom but after strong pressure from the public opinion they ve let the rocket fire to take place.
Even though thousants of rockets are being fired those two days no injuries are reported and only minor damages to the churches and to the surrounding buildings.
