I've got a dilemma. Despite careful financial planning I haven't won the lottery yet and I can't retire and go into full time Combat Mission map making for all the scenarios I'd love to see moddled in the CMx2 engine. A couple of coffee infused ideas struck me this morning in the office. So after I talked myself out of trying to install CM onto my work computer (IT would probably find out...), I settled on the second idea. Anyone ever tried to build a CM map in a group?
The Idea
Employing dropbox, a small group of players all pitch in and build a 'largish' map together. This could get easier with the improvements coming in the CM 3.0 Engine upgrade.
- The map itself should be quite large (Master Map size?) so that builders can portion off part of the map to focus on.
- Once the initial 'draft' is complete they can rotate positions to touch up / point out problems in other people's areas.
- Would be a good chance to share tips and tricks, especially if a couple of newbies want to learn a thing or two from editor old hands.
- Would take a bit of project management skills but can be easily done via text files in dropbox to show who the map is currently 'checked out' to.
The Pitch
I really want take a stab at least making a map of the Italian cliff top town of Orsogna and the surrounds. This was the site of a number of New Zealand attacks in December 1943 as part of Monty's push up the Adriatic coast. Battlefront would probably release 10 more titles before I got around to finishing it on my own so putting this idea out there. I've already got research I can share with any partakers as well as a 'shell' of a map with the elevations already mapped out matching Google's terrain view. Already it would look like an awesome looking siege map if it was ever completed.
Anyone interested? Not necessarily to sign up but even just to pursue this a little further to see if it's feasible?
