Intro and silly questions

Hi all,

So after months of watching on Youtube (Ithinkial, Johnsy et al) and playing the demos, I’ve finally bitten the bullet – like so many of my pixeltruppen – and invested in the CM:BN big bundle.

I’ll probably be looking for some PBEM opponents at some point when I’m confident that I’ll make at least a semi-challenging opponent, but I was hoping to trouble you with some noob questions in the meantime.

Are there any mods that I should be looking to get off the bat? Aris’s (sp?) work seems to be really popular. I’m sure much of this comes down to personal preference, but I’d be interested to hear if there any you consider ‘essential’.

Any tips on getting the best performance? The demos of CM:FI and CM: RT seem to run more smoothly on my laptop (Lenovo Y50, 2.5 GHz i7 4710, GTX 860M 4 GB, 16 GB RAM). If you have a similar system, let me know if there are any tweaks you'd suggest.

A little about me; I’m a history graduate living in the UK. I got into WWII – and probably history as a whole – as a child through my uncle’s massive collection of Commando comics (‘eat lead, chum!’ ‘Himmel!’). From small acorns… Totally new to wargaming though.

Enough rambling, thanks for your help in advance!

Excellent - welcome

Aris's work is excellent. There are a couple of other things worth looking at.

Floating Icons - there are a variety of options but I am partial to mine:

There are various UI mods, like Mords portraits:

Juju's UI tweaks:

As a Canadian I appreciate the period maple leaf:

Here are a couple of threads that talk about performace and have advice re Nvida cards:

Interesting. I have a feeling that most people coming to this game have already done some war gaming with miniature models or cardboard and hex paper. Have fun.

Thanks mate, I'll look into all of that. I've always enjoyed RTS and turn-based strategy (Command & Conquer, XCOM, Frozen Synapse ect), but the CM games take it to another level in terms of their detail and realism. Loving it so far.

Good to know you. Enjoy your first PBEM game!
I can't play against the computer any more, just doesn't measure up.

Welcome and enjoy,

As you have already discovered this is a fun and relaxing place (well it is when my meds are working). Canadian Cats's links to BF foru,ms for tech help are probably your best bet, as for Mods, have a go with a few Aris's are brilliant visually but NONE are vital (IMNSHO - See I'm big headed as well as stranger than most:cool:).

I still play against the AI on occassion (only way I can win ;) ) it's useful to try out weird tactics or play with kit you're not used to.

Hello Yail, welcome to THE FEW GOOD MEN!
Good to have you with us! :)

Joining this community was the right decision because Combat Mission is at it's best when played head to head (H2H)
- as you already know. ;)

For to get involved into the PBEM H2H gaming action, please go to the gaming section and choose the category with
the game that you'd like to play (CMBS or CMBN etc.). There you'll find the postings for gaming requests
(just scroll down a little). And there you may also start your own, of course. ;)
