Just seen AI led friendly fire for the first time

I'm in the middle of a CMFB PBEM with @Mad Mike at the moment and in the last turn, without any orders on my part, one of my American HMG teams spotted a friendly Sherman some 600 yards away, announced "enemy tank spotted", and then proceeded to fire on the tank commander poking his head above the turret hatch.

I've never seen AI led friendly fire before. Does anyone know if this is a new feature to CMFB, or perhaps just a bug/glitch? We're playing our game on 'iron' settings. If AI directed friendly fire is something new, kudos to BF I think it adds a little more realism.

There's been some discussion of this at BattleFront forums. Seems that FF can occur when when the Firing unit does not see the Friendly unit while engaging a spotted enemy. Your example does not indicate whether that might be the case.

No enemy units near or in front of the tank. The HMG team couldn't see any enemy units anywhere on the map

Understood. Another case where FF can took out Friendlies was when the player directed area fire into a location. When the firing unit cannot see the nearby Friendlies, or the player forgets to cease fire from the firing unit over time, rounds and ricochets can hit Friendlies. That doesn't seem to be the situation you describe either.

Correct, it wasn't this situation either, which is why it was so strange. The AI took over and directed my HMG team to fire at one of its own tank commanders.
