Battleship Scharnhorst transiting northeast through the Kiel canal, date unknown.

Trivia item, we had a young enlisted sailor (US Navy) arrive at our command a few years back whose name was Scharnhorst. All of us history buffs pestered him non-stop about whether he was related to General von Scharnhorst, the ship's namesake.

"Pocket" would have been a good nickname for your mate. ;)

Looking around for info on Scharnhorst, found this:

Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were nicknamed "Salmon" and "Gluckstein" by the British.

Seeing Louis's post of the diagram of U-Boat maneuvers I wondered where one might see a U-Boat.....

"The only remaining U-boats are currently on display in museums, with the most well-known being the U-505 at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois; U-995 at the Laboe Naval Memorial near Kiel, Germany; and U-2540 at the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven, Germany;.

Key points about these U-boats:
U-505: Considered one of the most accessible U-boats for visitors, located in Chicago.
U-995: Part of the Laboe Naval Memorial in Germany.
U-2540: Also located in Germany, at the Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven."

The U505:

Two very interesting documentaries (unfortunately only in German) about a somewhat different history of the German Imperial Navy in World War I

Under the Imperial Flag (1/2): The Caravan of Sailors

Under imperial flag (2/2) - The chase off Cape Horn
