I do plan to post this over on BFC once I get admitted, but thought I would try here as well….
I recently upgraded from a 2012 Mac desktop to a near- top-of-the-line 27 inch Mac desktop (3.8GHz Intel i7, 16Gb RAM, AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16Gb video card). One thing that I was looking forward to was playing Combat Mission (virtually the only game I play) with better frame rates and maxed-out mods - both to enhance my enjoyment, but also as part of improving AAR videos.
After transferring over my CM games to the new Mac via Time Machine and running in native, up-to-date Big Sur macOS I am achieving very good frame rates….at least until the game freezes up. I experience video freezes every 3-4 minutes, and it seems to happen mostly when I get down on ground level and zoom the camera around. There generally are no issues with playback from “high altitude.†This is happening on ALL CM titles I own (exception: CMBS). Sound continues during the freezes. When the game “unfreezes,†the game world must be re-drawn by the computer.
I tried deleting and then installing new CM games from BFC downloads directly, but the issue persists.
The issue does not change in frequency regardless of what graphics settings (low or high) that I use in the game.
The issue continues even after eliminating all mods.
I run in 2560 x 1440 res, but the issue happens even when I drop the resolution.
It does not depend on the size of the map - as far as I can tell. It’s possible that more trees = more frequent crashes, but hard to say.
Sometimes, the game crashes to desktop. The typical crash report states:
"Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread
Exception Type: EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT)
Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000
Exception Note: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY
Application Specific Information: abort() called
Application Specific Signatures: Graphics hardware encountered an error and was reset: 0x00000002"
Other times, the game will start “pixelating†in small areas and recover. Other times the “pixels†and off-color polygons spread over the entire screen.
I have run Cinebench to check CPU (and GPU?) benchmarks, and the hardware seems to be performing. I ran the “Heaven†3D graphics test and got 70+ fps on the highest graphics settings with none of the above issues. I use Lightroom and iMovie (with both open simultaneously) and have no issues. These indicators would seem to suggest that it is not a hardware problem. It seems to be an issue with my new rig and Combat Mission.
Have any other Mac users had this issue, particularly with the AMD Radeon Pro 5700XT card?
Should my next step be to try running in a Windows 10 environment (either via Boot Camp or an emulator) to see if the issue persists? My thinking is that perhaps a AMD drivers issue might be corrected under Windows 10.
Any advice welcome! Age has passed me by in the area of detailed computer knowledge.
(Note: also ticketed to BFC).
