LOS

Playing CM2 for the first time, I am scratching my head on some of the LOS behavior I've seen so far. It appears puzzling in some instances and one opponent said it is "complex" which might be a nice way of putting it.

With 1-1 modeling in mind with soldiers, does the engine also model 1-1 terrain, in particular trees? Does each separate bole in the woods act as a LOS hindrance / blockage?

I've had two instances where I excruciatingly checked LOS with tanks and thought all LOS was blocked behind a wood mass only to have my tanks get spotted and shot through the wood mass. One instance was a one shot kill over 900 meters on my moving tank behind the wood mass.

It is obviously something I am learning to be aware of now :)

It is complex, I've found that in infantry squads one or two men can see a target while others can't and tanks may seem to be unable to spot an area on the ground but they can/will spot enemy who might move into that area.
Also I heard it said that LOS is abstracted in some way, how that actually works I have no idea.

Forums are full of people scratching their head about the strange ways CMx2 engine deals with LOS and reporting strange events. BF always said there was no problem, without ever giving a clear explanation about how it works. So it could as well be coin flips or dice rolls... :) Nobody knows !

Thank you for replies, gentlemen. It is not very heartening to hear.

I see its also possible to nudge a tank through woods where solid woods were impassible in CM1. Is there only 1 type of wood terrain? It seems the 1-1 allows for tanks to actually go through woods if there is space enough between each individual tree bole. I've managed to wiggle an SU-76 into and through some woods. This must be the case where I've seen shots reach far into and through woods - the golden beebee found a way!

It depends on the tile underneath the trees, TTB. There is a light and a heavy woods tile. Vehicles cannot enter/pass through heavy tile. Of course, any type of tile could have trees on it..grasses, mud, rocky, etc., some of which also block vehicle movement. Trees are abstracted, so what you see is not necessarily what you get when looking at them up close. Vehicles routinely move right through tree graphics.

Still the biggest flaw in the game - and as mentioned above not one BF will acknowledge because they would need to bin CM2 and create a brand new CM.

I remember reading a post where someone described LOS to the old "whack a mole" game. You just don't know what will pop up where!. Makes for excruciating moments in front of the computer screen with me screaming things like "shoot for fu#@'s sake!" and my wife thinking me insane.

War is hell though. I just play the game intuitively, placing units in terrain that I think is good and just let the game roll.

LOS in CM2 is two thinks.

Firstly a complete nonsense, it isn't consistent and it doesn't even work how Battlefront say it should.

Secondly, its the entire reason the game (almost) works - it is what makes players think something clever is going on.
