The Maxim gun was the first self-powered machine gun, invented by the American-born Briton Sir Hiram Maxim in 1884.

It was adopted by the British Army in 1889, and first used by Britain`s colonial forces in the Matabele war in 1893-1894. In one engagement, 50 soldiers fought off 5,000 warriors with just four Maxim guns.

The PM M1910 was a heavy machine gun used by the Russian Army during World War I and the Red Army during World War II. It was adopted in 1910 and was derived from Hiram Maxim's Maxim gun, chambered for the standard Russian 7.62x54mmR rifle cartridge.

The M1910 was mounted on a wheeled mount with a gun shield and was replaced in Soviet service by the SG-43 Goryunov, starting in 1943. In addition to the main infantry version, there were aircraft mounted (PV-1) and naval variants.

Old but effective.

It seems the 1910 is used quite a bit by the Ukrainian forces.

"Ukrainian forces took a number of seemingly antiquated platforms from storage even before Russia mounted its invasion last year. The weapon was Russia’s version of Hiram Maxim’s original machine gun design developed in the 1890s. The M1910 was largely used as a secondary or defensive weapon during WWII, and went on to see service in the Chinese Civil War, the Korean War, and Vietnam. The trooper is seen firing a heavily modified M1910/30 Maxim water-cooled machine gun fitted with modern optics, stock, and suppressor."
