I've been using Google Maps for some of my CM(x2) map making and found a trick that's been quite useful to get both elevation curves and the satellite view over the same area.
1. Use the Snipping Tool, Window Snip and save your terrain view with elevation curves
2. Without moving the map view, switch to satellite view and again Snip it and save with a different name
3. Now find a picture editor program that handles layers. Been using GIMP 2 myself and found it quite user friendly.
4. Load your elevation curve view to GIMP (or program of your choosing).
5. Now load your satellite view as a second layer to your image. In GIMP, its File, Open as Layers
6. Now measure the scale on your Google Map image, either of the two layers; say 200m is 50 pixels
7. Using the Rectangle Select Tool, select the area and size you want for your CM map; say a 2km by 2km map, 500 by 500 pixels
8. Now crop your image to that size. Since the elevation curve view and the satellite view are layers, both are now cut to the right size, over the same area.
9. Save your layered GIMP image. Now we need to separate the layers again.
10. Delete the satellite view layer. In GIMP, its Layers, Delete Layer, which deletes the current layer. This leaves you the elevation curve layer.
11. Now "Export As" the elevation curve layer as a 24 bit BMP file and its ready for use as the 'special editor overlay'.
12. Now reload your layered GIMP image from step 9.
13. Delete the elevation curve layer. Layer, Stack lets you switch between layers in GIMP. This leaves you the satellite view layer.
14. Now export the satellite layer also as a BMP file and they're both ready for overlay use
Enjoy
