Found this on the Fine Scale Modeller site. Never tried it myself but it sounds like a great idea.
"Save flash from older models
Save the flash  thin, excess plastic frequently found in older kits  because it makes a great filler. During assembly, some kits have gaps or seams that need to be filled: sheet plastic is too thick, and filler is inconvenient because you risk destroying surrounding detail while sanding.
Instead, I use flash to fill gaps between trailing edges of wing halves, between fuselages and stabilizers, and in wing-to-fuselage gaps. Lightly work or press the flash into place, apply liquid cement, let it cure, then slice off the excess. The flash will even melt slightly, since it’s so thin, and fill the gap well. The excess can be used on another kit. Flash comes in various thicknesses and colors, so you might have to experiment. I keep a small supply on my workbench all the time for quick use."
