I watched this last night at the cinema. It's hard to believe it's the same actor who played Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series but Gary Oldman may well be on target to get an oscar for this portrayal of the British wartime leader.
The film covers the period from when Churchill takes over from Chamberlain as Prime Minister, up to the evacuation at Dunkirk. Although now we look back and cannot see anyone other than Churchill being the leader of the British people during that period, at the time it was not quite so clear cut. Unpopular in his own party and unable to shake off the spectre of Gallipoli, Churchill has to find belief in himself before he can gain the trust of his cabinet, his King and the British people.
As the Panzer's close in on the BEF, those seeking peace with Hitler gain confidence and with his back to the wall we see a portrayal of a man who rose to become one of the most respected leaders in the history of the British nation.
