I hear a lot about Mark Knopfler. And, of course he is a great guitarist. But he isn't the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan ! I saw him live once in Rotterdam. And man ! Could he play ! (I think he had a better voice too)
A little example:

You cant' compare... Mark Knoepfler is for me one of the best pop rock guitar player, while Steevie Ray is one of the best blues (or even should I say Texas blues) guitar players. I would throw in there Johnny Winter and Eric 'Slowhand' Clapton who can play both styles.
I have CDs "Texas Flood", "The sky is crying" and the live Tokyo concert with his gang Double Trouble. Too bad that helo crashed when he was still young...

I agree whole heartedly. Both are/were incredible musicians but hard to compare them. SRV was an incredible blues guitarist but I believe Knopfler to be the more complete musician especially when you consider his songwriting abilities. However, as long as we are talking SRV, here is one of my favorites:

And what about this version with Albert and BB King !!!

With BB King, Etta James and others... what a bunch !!!! This was before the famous black hat...

For me, SRV is in another league then both Clapton and Johnny Winters. BTW, if Clapton hadn't give up his seat to SRV in the helicopter.......

That's what I said, it's difficult to compare people who don't play the same music. SRV could be compared to Johnny Winter because they both play Texas Blues. In another way, I could say that Paco de Lucia or the Rosenberg brothers are better guitar players than Steevie Ray Vaughan, it would not make any sense. They all are fantastic players in their field of music.
