I was delighted to see that the new picture atop the forum page has my old unit patch in it. The scroll of the 1st Ranger Battalion.

We share one, I served in the 2nd ID for a year before I joined the Rangers.

Interesting collection, Bane! How come you served in so many different units? Did you get reassigned with every promotion?

That is the way the American Army used to work. You were moved around a lot. The longest I was ever in one area was usually three years. But I spent a year here or there too. The thinking was that if your the new guy, you have to prove yourself. So they kept us on the move. Now days, they are trying to stabilize Soldiers in the same units longer.

And promotions did have something to do with it too.
Lord Bane

What rank are you know LB ? If you don't mind me asking.

Nice, you've done some time then. How many years left in the tank ?

Actually, I haven't been on a tank since 2007. The unit that I am in now transitioned into a light cavalry unit and we have up-armored HMMWVs. I was planning to retire this month. But then was asked to postphone my retirement for a couple years to help the unit.

I hope they gave a nice wee incentive then. By the sounds of it you've earned it.

Perhaps stay with it mate for awhile, until they pension you out........or is that to long

I am elligible for 55% retirement now. When I retire in two years it will be 60%.
Lord Bane

Sorry to be a pain, but what is the % referring too and why not a full pension ? Years of service ?

The % is the % of my base pay that I will get in my pension. You can only get up to 75% at 30 years. No way am I staying that long!
Lord Bane

Sounds to me like a case of somebody wearing out his welcome.

Would you care to elaborate? What do I know about the assignment policy of the US Army being a German?

Cheers for that.

30 years is a long stint, you would be a married to the army if you were in that long I would think.
