No Man's Sky

I was very surprised to find, after a quick search, that apparently no one here at FGM
has played this game! Now I do understand that when this game was released it was
about 2 yrs too early! And it was awful. I mean worse than awful. However...
The Devs went hard to work and after years of patches the game now seems to get
nothing but rave reviews. Devs now admit that it is now the game it was meant to be.
...
Sooo... I really like the concept of the sandbox open world where the player can just
go off and do whatever they want since the Devs kind of just threw the term "linear"
out the window. And while the game is RTS the combat aspect of the game is just
on of many things to do and can easily be avoided (mostly) if that's your play style.
...
I'm leaning heavily towards loading this up, but...it kind of looks like a lifestyle rather
than just another game. Not sure if I want to make that kind of gaming commitment
right now. However, it also looks like one of those games one can just play for a while
in a beer & pretzels way so there's that. It just looks fun to me.
...
And even after all these years the price on Steam is still $59.99. Understandable
given the extraordinary amount of work I guess.
...
Hmmm...

Hi @mTk -
I have been an avid NMS player since launch. While the original game was not what was advertised, Hello Games quickly patched it up to an adequate level and has now gotten the game to what was initially promised.
NMS is #2 for my gaming hours, behind CMx. What I like is the fairly chill exploration experience. You can play the game pretty much as you like, and set your own goals. Make money and buy the best, rarest spaceships. Build the coolest base on a planet (or underwater). 100% explore some tiny star cluster that no one else will ever see. Find as many different animals as you can. Kill robots and uncover the mysteries of their purpose. Be a bounty hunter. Finish the main story. You get to choose. (And you can do all those things at once).
I would say the main story is kinda meh, but a chunk of it does introduce you to all the different systems. But, you really could ignore it completely. The other negative is don’t expect complex NPC interaction like a Bethesda game or similar RPG.
The game is for people entertained by just seeing what’s around the next corner, who are OK making their own adventure, and who like learning a fairly deep but accessible system and using it to incrementally improve your gear over time.

I hear that if you find a planet that no one else has you can name it.
This is true, and also extends to any creatures, plants, etc.
The NMS is so massive that after *years* of playing the game, I bet I haven’t set foot on more than 6-7 worlds that were previously discovered. I’ve probably “discovered” over 100.
