Noob question about setting up virtual proving ground

Recently getting back into wargaming after a few decades away from board gaming (ASL, for example). Combat Mission is, for sure, the shizzle!

Was wanting to experiment with specific weapons and tactics similar to what JoseyWales and SmartWargamer have done in their videos and in the second training mission for CMFI. Thus, the "virtual proving ground".

What is the best way to accomplish this? Quick battle, scenario editor, ???

Flexibility and changes more important than fancy.

Thanks in advance for this great community.

i make a target range map for every title i have.. to do that go into the scenario editor...

i make the map for modern titles about 2.5 km long (about 1.5 for ww2 titles) maybe about half as wide..

with my long rectangle map i will go to the set up zones for each side do about half the map blue and half red....

then in the terrain features i select a road and use it to mark off ranges..... usually 1 dividing it in middle and then equally spaced to the end just for a rough gauge... so i can test something at the full 2.5km or i will have markers to be able to place whatever in there at about whatever ranges i want

save the map in your quick battle folder... then whenever u wanna test ... go to quick battle set for 2 player hotseat human select forces obviously..... when the difficulty screen comes up set it to author test it allows u to see both sides on map at same time.... .. but with the hot seat 2 player game select whatever units u want for each side place them on map...if u dont want one side or other to shot... give them short target arcs... or if u to know if a platoon of this tank will win heads up againt whatever tank set them up watch them bang it out.....just remember those test are good to show weapons effect .... but they are not that valid for actual battle performance because chances are u wont be on a dead level map ... and the 100 other things that affect how each unit will perform...

i am a complete novice with tech in general and the scenario editor in particular but making that type of thing is fairly easy plus it dont got to be perfect ... it is just a target range after all

Yeah, good tips above. For exactly repeatable setups, I create my test case in the scenario editor and run usually hotseat H2H. I save the game at a point before the next turn is generated and then keep loading this save file to test the same setup as many times as I want.
I have done a ton of testing in CM, you may want to check out the report in my signature for some ideas.
