with being new to the community how does this work?
I guess you read the forums and add your opinions in the various threads. Offer to play someone in a battle. 
There are many campaigns and tourney going on. Visit the threads and ask to be put on a reserve list in case someone drops out. You will be contacted if that happens. These are all first come first serve. So you really have to be an active member to jump into one. New ones will state when sign ups will be so then you just watch and wait. In the meantime put up some requests for PBEM games. Could be ladder or non ladder depending on your wishes.
