Just testing the waters to see if there might be any interest in a mostly random CMFI QB tourney in the near future. Here are the parameters I had in mind:

Yep, you might have to play as the Italians. Not a mirror match. Random pairings. Sides would be switched each round. No crybabies need apply. Any interest?

Well I just bought CMFI so a tourney like this is just up my alley. Probably will get to see new and interesting stuff. Oh and I play hockey so you'll get no whining from me.

I'm in if this flies

I'll give it a laugh/go. Looks like it could reward crazy/impossible missions - count me in :)

I suggest you run some tests to see what you would get ... especially with Combat Force ... if one side gets Italian Infantry Only and the Allied side gets US Armored Only or Mixed and the AI picks no AT assets for the Axis side, it's game over from Turn 1.

Also suggest to keep a tourney ticking over at a good pace, make the battles shorter than 1 hour.

OTOH if all the games are mirrored -

1. the winner is the player who most effectively overruns their opponent (or who runs away and hides best.)

2. Reality is full of events where troops were seriously outmatched and had to carry out rapid withdrawals/desperate defenses to avoid simple routs.

3. Lets not get too serious about any sort of balance after all "life is rarely fair and often harsh" (no more so than on the battlefield).

My god I'm sounding sane and reasonable today ........ MEDIC!!!!!

Even with mirror battles, with random draws, the OOB's for both battles will be entirely different ... a player can get screwed by the luck of the kit draw both ways in same match.

For example:

Match 1: Player 1 (axis) - gets Italian - Infantry Only vs Player 2 (allies) - Armor Only (a few Shermans in that mix - game over)

Match 2: Player 1 (Allies) - gets Canadians - Infantry Only vs Player 2 (axis) - gets German Army - Armor only (unless Canadians are lucky and get some PIATS -- also possibly game over)

It ceases to be fun very quickly for some and enthusiasm may flag very quickly (just speaking with years of running tourney experience) -- the random AI equipment pick in CM2 is very weird sometimes (worked much better in CMx1)

That's why I say -- run some tests setting up some QB's and see what happens over say a dozen set ups. :D

EDIT:
Just saw parameters for QB's is May 1944 -- there's no Italians available in that period -- so that'll fall away -- and by then most Infantry is reasonably well equipped with Bazookas/Shreks/Fausts/PIAT -- although Allies usually have far less.

ALSO -- CMFI/GL has very few Axis attack/probe/assault QB maps -- so automatic map choice might run into a few problems as well.

I agree. Doing a couple quick test of my own (not sure even why I did it because I know the QB selection of all BF games are flawed) does reveal that you will get very, very, lopsided results on match ups. I can definitely see this thing go down hill very fast as most will not find it very fun to be dealt a ridiculously shitty hand and have to try and at least just survive. I do think it would work with maybe some tweaks to the settings. Just my 2 cents.

how about an impartial Game Master setting up the battle then everyone in the tourney plays a mirror match against their opponent. This way if the random selection is stupid he can reset. Top guys with points move on.

Just thinking out loud here.

LOL -- yes -- -I did a few quick tests as well yesterday

Battle 1. Night attack by Brits having 8 Shermans and 3 M-10's vs a PzGren Coy with 2 halftracks and 1x 37mm Flak

Battle 2. Dawn attack by Brits with 2 companies of a Machine Gun Btn (that's about 24+ Vickers Mg's with ammo handlers and HQ's) vs a Crack Grenadier Company with 3x 81 mortars nad 1x 75mm Pak

First one might've been an interesting if bizarre battle .... the 2nd unfortunately a non-starter o_O

Sorry, I've been at work last three days with no time to check the boards.

Good points, Rico. What do you think might make this work a little better? Perhaps Medium only battles with MIX forces? Change the date to earlier so the Italians might be selected? Change the time limit to 30 minutes? Allow players to select their own forces, but still keep the Random nationality selection? Have an impartial person who is not playing do the random nationality selections for each game?

So, I think I have addressed most of Rico's concerns with the battle parameters in my most recent screenshot. This still retains a lot of "randomness", but (I hope) keeps anyone from being completely screwed from turn 1. I would rather this not be a mirror match tourney. Players will have to make the best of what they are given. Human pick forces, because I believe Rico is correct that AI force picks are.....problematic.

Any other suggestions? With a 30 minute time limit, should we do Small or Medium QBs?

Sound off if still interested. Must have CMFI/GL + 3.0 upgrade. Your main screen should look like this:

Really new guy here...I would be interested...I like the human element, forces you to make some choices given a fixed set of points and wondering what your opponent might pick.
