This man was a relative of my wife's ( great grandfather), and served with the 1/4th Battalion of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment ( West Riding Regiment) in WW1.
He was killed on 23rd September 1916 and is remembered at Thiepeval.

My son has been doing research on the family history and mentioned this man to me so I delved a bit to see what I could find out, and in doing so I came across this book...

It's quite a read and so far I can only say I'm engrossed in it, in particular from page 69 which deals with engagements from around the time he was lost.

I'm trying to pinpoint where he was on the day he died because the battle he had just fought finished the day before.

PS - the post title should read Edward not Edwards.

So, having now read a little more ( pages 80 onwards which shows a map of Thiepval Wood and details of the battle) and referencing page 289 which show where the battallion was at the time of his passing, I now know that he was engaged in the battle around the following areas:
Martinsart Wood
Hedauville
Crucifix corner Aveluy
Leipzig redoubt.

This stuff comes alive the more I read about it.
