Karl Mauss (May 17, 1898 – February 9, 1959) was one of the most distinguished tank commanders of the Wehrmacht during World War II. He was a lieutenant general and commander of the 7th Panzer Division.
The photo was taken at the "Fortress Gotenhafen" in March 1945. There he was seriously injured by artillery shell fragments and had a leg amputated.
After the war Mauss worked as a dentist in his own practice.
