Between the days 28/29 June 1941, following a two-year investigation, the FBI arrested Frederick Duquesne (a South African Boer and German soldier, big-game hunter, journalist, and spy) and 32 German spies on charges of relaying secret information on U.S. weaponry and shipping movements to Germany.
On Jan 2, 1942, the 33 members of the Nazi spy ring headed by Duquesne were sentenced to serve a total of over 300 years in prison.
William G. Sebold (1899/1970), a FBI double agent, was instrumental to the capture and conviction. One German spymaster later commented that the ring’s roundup delivered ‘the death blow’ to their espionage efforts in the USA.
