Tactical Question: Splitting Squads

As a relative noob to CMx2 but a bit of a vet in Cmx1 one of the biggest differences that stands out is the ability to split squads. I am sure this has plenty of ramifications in terms of manoeuvre and suppression, fire support etc.

I was just wondering what the collective wisdom was in regards splitting squads, is it something that is done in nearly all situations? Are there any gamey uses etc etc.

FWIW, I almost always split mine initially: you get more eyes on more different spots for recce/intel, and avoid a big group getting caught by e.g. incoming arty or HE fire that you haven't foreseen.

However, once split the separate teams do - surprise, surprise! - lack individual firepower, and may need to be combined again to bring sufficient weight of fire to bear on an enemy.

To try and get the best of both worlds, I try to keep the split teams in sight of each other and able to see the same potential target areas (with overwatch movement), so that they can support each other and all fire on the same enemy if one appears, but themselves present multiple targets for any enemy that sees them ...

I almost always split them, except in circumstances where they are moving up into contact and are out of the LOF of the enemy. I generally keep the teams in close proximity, but spread them out as needed depending on the experience and morale of the unit. I even generally split. Russian squads, but they always stay almost next to each other because of their general low experience morale, and to try to keep in the spirit of Russian tactics.

It is not gamy to do something that soldiers are trained to do. In the Corps, we trained on 'Fireteam' tactics all the time. Any Sgt not training his troops to keep their interval is cruising to lose his troopers.

I would not add much here to what the others have said, they've covered pretty good for you except this; splitting squads also make your units harder to detect or see from enemies perspective. I tend to split mine up in order to sneak up to my jump off point, then recombine them for the assault.

Other than for scouting, number one reason to split squads IMO is to reduce the enemies incoming fire effectiveness. Simply put, I'd rather have a small team take small arms or worse HE fire, rather than a whole squad. It also spreads out the enemies fire, instead of the enemy fighting 3 full units, it now sees and engages possibly 6 splits. In which case the enemy may often think it's facing more units than they really are, FOW we love you. I find most experienced players usually split their squads most of the time. Bottom line, the benefits outweigh the morale hit.

This excellent video shows you the advantages of splitting your pixeltruppen in an attack
