Hi all,

As im getting back into PBEM games, I wonder if, besides Bill's great blog, anyone has any interesting and/or useful recommendations for tactics sites/blogs/videos/books that they would recommend?

Im currently plowinb through Rommel's Infantry Attacks, great book if anyone hasnt read it.

My main issues currently seem to be getting armour into hull down and getting spotted first, and crawling a HMG to a perfect SBF position on a ridge, only to promptly get blown away.....perhaps I need to stick to wooded crests/bring a big enough SBF group that they dont all get pinned....

Not being an arse but as far as comparing some 'real world' tactics to what you should use in CM2 is questionable in my opinion. I read all of Bills stuff and it is pretty good. But after playing CM1 up to and including the latest version of CM2 I think many here will tell you to go with a 50-50 stance. Apply the common sense stuff that Bill teaches and be wary of using the other stuff. For example if you have a squad in a perfect hull down position sitting still for an extended amount of time they still might NOT get the spotting advantage on units running or moving across an open field. I think the game has built in modifiers to adjust for these situations but it is far from perfect. You always have anomalies that happen. Will applying 'real life' tactics help your odds? No one knows as BF has never really explained or hinted at the logic, as far as I know.

I guess what I am stating is that playing Mucho games is the best way to learn how the VIDEO GAME plays and what tactics will really work.

Hello,

I think the key in cm is getting an understanding of range which is difficult in a lot of maps because they are typically small, with short Los. If you think of spotting and observation - it's not to hard at under 300m. A lot of people go on about tank / at gun accuracy but i find on the larger maps 1st round hits are seldom especially against moving targets. Spotting is also more variable as you'd expect once you get to +500-700m

That's very incitefull. I suppose in any game representation some tactics will work and some won't. I guess the frustrating part is how little anything is ever 'textbook'. And partly what makes things interesting!

For example when I was in the military we spent weeks going over fire and movement, setting up a SBF position and finding a covered approach with 1/5th of the team to assault. What they don't tell you is that there's a 152mm assault gun over watching your SBF position and when you get there a high explosive death awaits, only for the assault squad to run into a hidden Ppsh team at 20 meters!

Ha ha the real world is never text book so would a top quality wargame try to be.

So long as the physics are good the other aspects should be variable that's the great thing

Thanks very much for the replies guys. I think that I may well pick up the big CMBN bundle in a week or so, there is bound to be some interesting tactical changes with the terrain in France and Holland to contend with.

Couple of suggestions for improving tactics in game.

1. Bil Hardenberger's BattleDrill Blog is excellent (IMHO) and has the advantage of using the game as an aid - also includes some training exercise scenarios.

2. Check out some of the AAR's on Battlefront site e.g. Market Garden beta test. Plenty more at the Battlefront Forums.

3. Have a look at some of the YouTube scenarios eg: JohnsyFGM's Channel feature an range of scenarios over all 3 WWII titles.

OTOH probably the best way to learn is by playing several smallish scenarios vs humans (or me :p ) many of the scenarios that come with the game are goods to play H2H to learn - they aren't necessarily balanced, but that just forces you to improvise and learn FAST.

HAVE FUN
