British and Australian forces (the Allied forces) occupied Benghazi, the second largest Libyan city.
Benghazi changed hands five times as fighting, first against the Italians and later the german Afrika Korps, ebbed and flowed across Libya's Mediterranean coast.

Italian citizens of Benghazi in Libya, applaud british and australian troops as they march into the city, following the capture of Mussolini's second largest African naval base.
