Operation Punishment.
German troops attacked the city from the north and from the east. The Yugoslav High Command formally surrendered unconditionally in Sarajevo on April 17, 1941.
After the German army occupied Sarajevo, the first actions they took were to remove the 1930 Gavrilo Princip plaque located at the site of the 1914 assassination and to destroy the new Sephardic synagogue, the Il Kal Grande, known as the Great Synagogue.
A column of German troops stand at attention after they captured Sarajevo on April 15, 1941.
