I have the same problem. Go to Catalyst center, 3D settings and activate AA and AF from the graphics card instead of leaving it to application driven. I use this for oldies like IL, SH 3 and CM. The artifacts will disappear...

PS : for modern games where you have AA and AF options, it is always better and faster to leave it to application. I created 2 profiles and I jump from one to the other. When I play NTW or ARMA2 I leave it to application, when I play oldies, I switch on AA/AF on card profile.
 
I'm very happy with my 5850... anyway don't have the money to change it...lol Also have a 512 Mo ATI on my HP laptop, works fine.
My main rig is still running XP Pro SP3 which needs less ressources, and use Gamebooster to free some RAM before starting games (except CM, of course, lol...)
