What is ToW 2 like?

I just watched a gameplay video but could not get a grasp.

How is it compared to CM?

It's fun. I like it. It plays differently than CM in that it can be a bit faster paced, but it does a lot of things better imo. Spotting is better (CM's system is a piece of crap), you can set the spacing and formation of your troops (i.e. no stupid action square system), the ballistics model is just as detailed and graphics/animations/effects are better. If your troops run out of ammo, they can take weapons and ammo from dead enemies to re-arm themselves. You can control troops either individually or as a squad. The AI is comparable to CM's, in other words it's passable. Nothing really earth shattering in that department.

If you play a campaign, your troops gain experience and skills as they continue to participate in the fighting. You can also select which units out of your OOB you want to take into a battle. Another thing I like about the campaign is that in some missions you'll fight alongside friendly AIs, giving those battles a coop feel. It also has a really nice encyclopedia where you can look at 3D models of each unit as well as its stats. There's a demo for ToW 2 Kursk floating around out there, so you may want to give it a try to see if you like it. The games are pretty cheap now, though. 9 bucks (8ish euros) for each of the ToW2 titles on Steam.

Wow that actually sounds pretty well. What about details? I love that there is a setup time for heavy weapons like PaKs, MGs, Mortars etc. How does ToW Feel there ? Gonna try it later.
And why aren't have ToW matches here? There need to be reason! :D

There are setup times for things like the AT guns, but the times are faster in ToW than CM if i remember correctly (been awhile since I've played ToW). Using the AT guns as an example, if you need to turn the gun to a different angle, the gun crew will leave their stations and take up positions along the gun's legs. They'll then lift it up and rotate the gun to the desired facing orientation. Once the gun is oriented correctly, they'll set it down and retake their positions. It's really cool to watch. They move the gun similarly, and you can also limber/unlimber the AT guns to trucks.

I think the big reason you don't see any ToW matches here or in other CM venues is really due to the fact ToW is real time only. The majority of the CM player base plays turn based. The other reason is that there is a perception among the CM community writ large that ToW is gamey trash. It really isn't, it's just different. I know @eniced73 plays ToW and has tried to get some games going, but I don't think he's had much luck.

Oh, and going back to my previous post about the ballistics model in ToW, there's a nifty feature that will let you see all of the hits a unit takes, what angle the projectile hit the armor, whether it penetrated or not and what type of ammo was used. Here's an example:

@Rambler is dead on. I always said if you could combine the best of TOW, GTOS, and CM you would have a kick ass game. Real time is the killer. I have made efforts to get real time tourneys and games going in the past and there is absolutely no interest. I come up playing the Close Combat games. Loved playing on the ladder at Tournament House and in the many tourneys Homba put together. So Real Time is just enjoyable to me as turn based.

I tried the demo now.
Since I'm a hardcore simulation nerd - some things slowed down my fun.
When marking units everyone is throwing out some sounds. It's like playing Starcraft or something :D
Didn't like that much.
The other thing is I'm happy how you can vary the formation width distances between every soldier...but I did not liked the robot like all in-Line movement.
Using line formation instead of column is also because of movement speeds...trying to stay in the same line takes more time for every soldier to look left and right to align. Column therefore had a speed advantage.
So when they include formations...then with all benefits and drawbacks please.
Well sorry I'm a typical german nagger in such things.

And if somebody know tell me to try to make it better then...

I'm already on it :p
Prepare for 2020 !

Do you have ToW3 as well? For awhile there was a guy converting ToW2 to -3 engine posting on Battlefront forum, but I think that went way by the wayside. Anyway, I have these titles and like them too. Real time solo is enjoyable too.

Hey good to know that other people like this game, it'll be great to set up a game, I have all.
