A convoy carrying food and ammunition supplies from Kandahar airbase to the garrison at Lashkar Gah has been ambushed along Highway 9. The principal route from Kandahar to Helmand province.
The advance elements consisting of the 1st truck group and its escort of 2nd Platoon, A Company Mechanised Reconnaisance, have been ambushed between two ridges in the desert area between Kandahar and Helmand.
They reported that the Mujihadeen initiated the ambush with mines along the road and an attack from recoilless anti armour weapons from fighting positions in the surrounding ridges before contact was lost.
2nd echelon elements were just 5 minutes behind the advance element and have just entered the ambush area. The trucks must get through to Lashkar Gah.
