SM-Restless Night

Throughout the day German tanks and infantry attacked 1st Battalion, 13th Guards Rifle Division around the Nail Factory. By evening, the Germans cut the battalion in two. One part, including the battalion HQ, was cut off near the Univermag department store on Red Square. Four times reinforcements were knocked back by German fire. The battalion commander and his staff were killed. The German IR 191, 71st Infantry Division attacked again that night using tried and true infiltration tactics. Exhausted men from both side groped and strained in the dark. Then the creaking sound of tracks was heard through a rare moment of silence. A welcoming sound for one side, but a nightmare for the other.
