They are shell bursts. Where an artillery shell has hit the ground and churned up the earth.

Oh no PoorOldSpike is the purveyor of a lot of these fine shots... I just ported them across for him when our site died a year ago.

I computer-enhance most of them by enlarging/brightening/darkening/sharpening them.
The FGM photo sections are the best in the world by far..
