Trivia item, we had a young enlisted sailor (US Navy) arrive at our command a few years back whose name was Scharnhorst. All of us history buffs pestered him non-stop about whether he was related to General von Scharnhorst, the ship's namesake.

Looking around for info on Scharnhorst, found this:

Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were nicknamed "Salmon" and "Gluckstein" by the British.
