A question of spotting

I know you are new to CM2 and seem to have some problems how to interact with the game or how to interpret some infos on the screen. It takes time to get used to it all. Keep on playing and all will fall into its place.

I will certainly do, but chances are it will probably remain a "secondary game" and not the center of my gaming time like CM1 has been before.

Over and out...:)

Haha ! I see you have an explanation for everything ! A T34 buttoned on a slope standing 45 degrees upwards is able to see a tank in front ( through a glass window in the bottom ? ) and put a round in the lower part of the hull !

I surrender... :)

PS : the Panther is veteran and the crew is in fine shape and rested...

Please, ther is no need to get picky. I just want to help you. You seem to be a very skilled tactician but you are obviously lacking the basics of how to use CM2 engine and get viable information from the battlefield. And thats the point where I wanted to help. Master the transition from CM1 to CM2 as many people find it difficult.

My statement was just regarding from the Panther POV. As you can read above. I never said something about spotting of the T-34 or explained it. I simply haven`t noticed that there is also the POV from the T-34. That indeed seems weird. What makes me wonder about the gun is, that`s why I mentioned it, that it is not pointing in the direction of the Panther. I should point there as he fired a few seconds away. My next question may sound silly, but are you sure that this T-34 was shooting at your Panther? I guees the answer is yes, but you will find some topics over at BF were this happenend :).

And again you missed some important points in what I wrote. It is not just the experience of the crew and if they are rested. I am more interested in their status. For example. Are they nervous? Does the Panther have AT-ammo or is it depleted? Are all parts of the Panther in good shape? As there is this big fat hole near the gun I sense that this culd be the source of trouble. A whacky crew or maybe the weapons controller is damaged or something else? All this information is available to you and maybe there you can find the explanation why the PANTHER didn`t shoot. A screenshot would help but again there is none. You want my help. Then let me help you.

I am close to quitting this discussion. You are obviously making assumptions based on what you see. But the point is you definitely miss very much information given to you as you simply don`t know it is there. Or where to find. Or what basic commands really do and what you think they do or should do. You can`t know that and still in a learning process. That`s fine. But getting picky at the messenger (me) I don`t like.

Gun Elevation limits are not modelled in CMx2, so this explains why the T34 could fire from its awkward position pointing 30 degrees in the sky.
It's an abstraction in the engine since it would be very hard to implement an AI which could do all the fine positioning required when absolute, real life gun elevation limits would have to be observed. A human player could do this just fine, but the AI would suck at it and would be even further disadvantaged than it already is.
The latest versions of the engine have at least introduced a time penalty for targeting and firing with tanks at very close targets (like infantry lying on the ground 5 meters away from the tank or an HMG on the third floor of a building 10 meters to the left hand side of the tank).

@Strachwitz Your explanation is terrific. It reminds me how in real life (Army life that is) when setting up an engagement area, how a tank crew or infantry fighting vehicle crew bore sight their main guns to cover an area. They usually will take the gunners sights to do this to make sure they can see the important parts of the engagement area. Your sighing technique for the game definitely mirrors real life techniques.

Do you use any real life experience to come up with this technique or just used good common game sense?

Thank you for taking the time to lay out a great LOS and sighting argument.

Hm, although I served my time as a Leutnant commanding a Platoon it had more to do with common game sense I guess :).

But it took a while until I really realized and established trust that I really could believe my eyes when scanning the CM battlefield. Sometimes even the LOS tool tells me there should be no sight beforehand but once I am at the spot most of the time I am able to spot right there where I wanted to spot. That's the reason I not only rely on the targeting tool to check lines of fire but also my eyes from the POV of the unit.

I was only trying to make some humour about the tank spotting through the floor... Humour is the only thing that makes life bearable. :)
This discussion is becoming way too serious for me, we are only talking about a PC game... I'm out.

PS : since you mentioned it, I am also retired Capitaine in the french army.

Gentlemen, please continue a polite and respectful conversation for the benefit of everyone around.
We all can learn a lot from this "autopsy" of examples of real CM-life...;)
In fact I really would like to know what happened to the Panther.
Is there damage of optics, weapon control, etc?

I myself as a successful long-time CMx1 player was pretty disappointed when I started to play CMx2 with CMBN since a lot of things did not "feel" right based on my experience. In the end both games remain pretty different "constructions" of the real world. You just have to get used to the new engine. I still hate the ActionSpot-system and miss some things (demolishing houses with demolition charges...;) ) but have to admit that I is worth to undergo the training with CMx2.
